Hollywood has a new leading lady, and we couldn’t be more excited to tell you all about the Galway girl that is taking the film industry by storm.

If you are a fan of the DreamWorks films, then you will not want to miss what we are about to tell you.

Not only has the first woman ever been hired to score a major DreamWorks film in Hollywood, but she’s Irish too!

Hailing from Ballinasloe, Galway woman Amie Doherty makes Hollywood history as she becomes the first woman to score a DreamWorks film.

Amie Doherty will be a name on everyone’s lips for years to come, paving the way for other female composers in the industry. But how did this all happen for a girl from Ballinasloe, we hear you ask?

Galway woman Amie has worked extremely hard to get where she is today. And she is as excited as we are about her new venture.

Growing up in Galway, she came from a very musical family. So, it was inevitable that she would get into the music industry. While she wasn’t too keen on performing, composing was definitely her thing.

Having studied at the prestigious Irish university Trinity College in Dublin, she continued her life path with a brief stint in Spain to pursue her dream by acquiring an MA in Film Scoring.

This led her to make her way across the pond to the glitz and glam of Hollywood. At this point, she didn’t quite realise what an important part this would play in her future career.

Whist in Hollywood, Amie had some remarkable jobs, including working on the orchestration for John Legend’s world tour.

She has also worked on some extremely well-known shows such as Star Trek, Fargo, The Umbrella Academy, and Altered Carbon. But little did she know the best was yet to come.

Until 2021, the world-renowned film company DreamWorks, which produced films such as The Boss Baby, Shrek, Shark Tale, and Madagascar, had never had a woman write the music for their films.

Following in the footsteps of the legendary Hans Zimmer, who scored the film Spirit, Galway woman Amie made Hollywood history as the first woman ever to score a DreamWorks film when she was hired for the sequel Spirit Untamed.

Not only was this a pinch-me moment for her, but she also found herself mingling with the stars. Big names include Jake Gyllenhaal and Julianne Moore, to name but a few.

The perfect role model – a great sing-a-long tune

Spirit Untamed, which was released in Ireland on 30 July, features the main theme song. As we all know, this is the song that will be stuck in many kids’ and parents’ heads for years to come.

Luckily, this one is a belter. Not only has she taken on the most impressive role in Hollywood, but she has had to do so during a global pandemic. This meant that most of the production took place remotely while many of the team were in different time zones.

Let’s hear it for the girls – a long-overdue moment

Amie truly pulled it out of the bag with this one. We couldn’t be more proud that our leading lady is making a name for herself and paving the way for other young women with similar aspirations.

In some recent interviews, she has humbly said, “It’s so lovely to be the first woman to score a DreamWorks film. But hopefully in a few years’ time, it’s not a big thing anymore.”

She mentioned that it is quite a male-dominated sector, and less than 3% of composers working on films are women. But this is just the start for our Amie. We can only imagine what big projects are in the pipeline for her soon as the Galway woman makes Hollywood history.

As expected, Amie may now have a slight American twang to her Galway accent. But she is as Irish as they come.

She is taking this amazing achievement in her stride, all whilst delivering memorable results. She certainly has a down to earth and humble charm about her, which we all love.

Her family gathered to take over a whole cinema to watch the film they’d all been waiting for – Spirit Untamed.

We can only imagine how emotional her family were seeing her work come to life on the big screen. We are sure they left the cinema humming the tunes of the catchy music written by their very own Amie.

Believe us when we tell you that won’t be the last you hear of Hollywood’s leading lady Amie Doherty. This is just the beginning, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for her.
